Asylum Wedding Photography
This is such an amazing and unique venue in Peckham, South London. So when a fellow photographer asked me if I’d like to provide his brother with their Asylum wedding photography, I jumped at the chance! It used to be the chapel for a collection of Almshouses in London for retired pub landlords, the word asylum referring to it as a place of sanctuary. It was heavily damaged in World War II and has been carefully restored in the recent years. The combination of it’s dilapidated state and high, open windows means the space has incredible light and is a dream for documentary wedding photography.
Best view of London from The Shard
But before I got to Asylum Chapel, I started at the equally impressive Shangri-La at The Shard for Kat’s preparations. She’d already been to the hair salon. So when she arrived at her 43rd floor room it was pretty much only to put the wedding dress on. That, and to savour the moment whilst enjoying probably the best view of London in the city.
By the time I got over to Asylum Chapel in Caroline Gardens, the guests were already arriving. I had enough time to check out the space for the best light and viewpoints before Kat and the bridesmaids arrived. With light streaming in behind her through the doorway, and from the pane-less windows above, Kat’s entrance was beautiful. It was a pleasure to photograph a wedding in such an unusual place, before following the guests outside where confetti and congratulations awaited.
Roast Restaurant for the Wedding Reception
Guests then boarded a couple of double decker London buses to leave Asylum for the short journey over to Roast in Borough Market where a fabulous meal awaited. It was the third of three superb venues that day. Each one is so totally London, a city which never fails to please me as a photographer.
