Top Wedding Photojournalist in the UK
Some fantastic news today as the Wedding Photojournalist Association (WPJA) announced the final positions for their 2018 wedding photography contest. I was thrilled to hear that I was the top wedding photojournalist in the UK in 2018 and placed 3rd in Europe and 5th in the whole world! If you’re a regular reader of this blog, you’ll know that this is a big deal to me. The pool of judges that are used each round to judge the hundreds or entries are all elite photojournalists working for the best newspapers and magazines in the world.
Not Judged By Wedding Photographers
The one thing they all have in common is that they’re not wedding photographers, so are looking at these images with fresh, unbiased eyes. As well as the usual aspects of light, moment and composition, these judges will be looking for a story-telling narrative in the photos. A huge thank you to all the judges for their time and effort throughout 2018 judging this contest, and congratulations to all the WPJA winning photographers, especially Brazilian photographer Vinicius Fadul, who is the overall Photographer of the Year. I had the pleasure of being in Vini’s team a couple of years ago at the Foundation Workshop in Texas, and am thrilled to see him take the overall prize this year.
Out of the 100 images I entered in this year’s contests, 25 of them were awarded. Here’s all 27 together, starting with this picture above, from Sven and Laura’s documentary wedding photography in Germany – it is a candid picture, but the real story is the weather, Sven’s expression and the setting, all working together to give the viewer a great idea of what it felt like to be at this wedding. Thank you to all my 2018 clients, and all the venues, planners, florists, bands, caterers and other suppliers that have set the scene each wedding day to allow me to find these great moments.Very excited to see what 2019 brings!
Well deserved Paul – love your eye for real moments! Inspiring work – looking forward to seeing more 🙂
