Award Winning Cambridge Wedding Photography
I was delighted to pick up a couple of Wedding Photojournalism awards from an Oxford Wedding and a Cambridge wedding earlier in the year. I haven’t submitted photos to awards for a few years, and the Wedding Photojournalist Association is the only awards that I truly value, as they are judged not by other wedding photographers, but by news and photojournalism specialists.
This first photo is from Hannah and John’s Spring wedding at Jesus College, one of the oldest colleges in Cambridge. As Hannah and John exited the main chapel to sign the register, I initially photographed from in front of them, and then let them pass. As I turned to capture the veil on Hannah’s dress, I could see one of the younger wedding guests entranced by the display. For me, this moment works best in black and white, to emphasise the contrast of the veil against the floor, and to draw your eye to the young guest. This photo won a gold award, the highest available in the WPJA contests.
Award Winning Oxford Wedding Photo
The image above is from from Jennifer and Russell’s Cèilidh at Bodleian Library earlier this season. It was in the Spring, and there had been some torrential rain in the week beforehand. On the day of the wedding, their original wedding venue was flooded. This news might be fairly traumatic for some couples, but Jennifer and Russell took it in their stride, and managed to arrange the wedding reception to be held at their ceremony venue, the Bodleian Library.
As Jennifer and her bridesmaids entered the courtyard, I moved back and used a wider lens to capture some of the architecture, and the line of bridesmaids. With Jennifer positioned on the left hand side of the frame, her glance back towards her Father and the last three bridesmaids gives the composition some balance. This image also won a gold award.
