Northamptonshire Marquee Wedding

Well, this Northamptonshire marquee wedding was a real treat to photograph! There was loads to look forward to in the run-up to this July wedding, so I knew it would be a lot of fun. Matt’s initial email read:

“After looking through your portfolio I decided to contact you after seeing the photo of the fighter with the Kalashnikov in your “about” – I have a very similar photo of my father taken of him with the Peshmerga guerrillas in Kurdistan (who was a cameraman with ITN) during the 1990 gulf war.”

Wedding Photojournalism in Northamptonshire

I’d photographed the 2nd Iraq war in 2003 when I was a news photojournalist at The Times newspaper, and I talk a little bit about this picture of the Peshmerger in my About Page. It was great that Kate and Matt had a connection with that photograph, and enjoyed the way I’ve taken the lessons I learnt as a newspaper photographer and applied them to story-telling photography at weddings.

When I arrived at Kate’s parent’s house for the preparations, the weather wasn’t looking too great – a typical British Summer day of grey skies and intermittent drizzle. No problem, that was not going to affect the fun and laughter at this wedding. Kate and Matt had planned a festival wedding reception, and the back garden looked superb as Kate finished getting ready for the ceremony. The added interest here was that Kate’s father is the local Vicar at St John’s the Evangelist Church, and would be ‘marrying his daughter’. This was also to be a joint baptism service for Kate and Matt’s daughter, so a doubly special church service.

Wedding Festival Atmosphere

After a great wedding ceremony and baptism, the wedding party were led back to Kate’s parent’s house by the superb Porterhouse Jazz Six who continued to entertain the wedding guests throughout the afternoon. Back at the festival tents, the party soon began, with loads of interesting things to photograph, from the children’s activity tent, through to Hasta Barista, and of course the field full of cows, watching the proceedings carefully from a few feet away!
