I’m one of five contract photographers at The Times newspaper, along with four staff photographers, and at the end of each month, we all submit three of our favourite images from that month for an internal competition – three are then chosen for display on the editorial floor at The Times. Over time, as budgets dictate, we have been shooting less daily breaking news photography, and concentrate instead on portraits and features.
Here are my three choices for this month.
This is a shot of a World War II Hurricane fighter, at the Imperial War Museum in Duxford where it is on display before being auctioned by Bonhams in London. We were treated to a 15 minute solo air display, but this is my favourite shot, on the ground.

This second photograph is a portrait of an Afghan Interpreter, Mohammad Rafi Hottak in his room in Leicester. He was injured by a Taliban bomb whilst working with British forces and sought asylum in the UK. His failed asylum bid was reconsidered in an embarrassing U-turn by the Home Office. I had to obscure his identity, though not totally, and this was one of several images I shot for this article.
The final photo is a portrait of actor Andrew Scott shot at the ITV offices on Grays Inn Road. It’s up on the 8th floor, and there’s an amazing opaque wall of glass that made for a nice graphic portrait. There are more portraits from this session with Andrew on this blog post – Andrew Scott portraits.
Other images that I didn’t choose to send in are below, including a portrait session with Jools Holland and Mick Hucknall, and a behind the scenes tour of the Archers set in Birmingham.
