First anniversary of the Costa Concordia wreck
By Paul Rogers
As a photographer on contract at The Times newspaper for the last 15 years, I’ve spent quite a bit of time abroad covering news stories around the world. But with a young family I rarely travel these days, so it was a welcome change to be able to fly to Italy last week to prepare an article on the first anniversary of the Costa Concordia passenger ship wreck which tragically saw the loss of 32 lives.
Despite it being a year ago, the carcass of the 950 foot long vessel is still lying just outside the port on the island of Giglio. It’s in such an environmentally sensitive area, that it’s been impossible to begin to dismantle it at the scene. Instead a hugely complicated plan to refloat it is in progress. The full story from The Times can be found here.
The ship is now surrounded by cranes, barges and floating accommodation, and a strict coastguard patrol stops anyone getting too close, so I was pretty much confined to finding interesting angles to photograph the wreck from the land. It’s still a pretty unusual sight, so I wanted to show it in context with the nearby port.

The wreck of the passenger shop Costa Concordia lies on rock outside Giglio Porto on the Italian island of Giglio. She ran aground on 13th January 2012. A multi million pound salvage operation is trying to refloat the ship in order to tow it away from the environmentally sensitive area to be scrapped.
