Church Wedding at St Bartholomew the Great London
Aki and Nick’s church wedding at St Bartholomew the Great London was a pleasure to photograph. London’s oldest parish church is a fantastic setting for a wedding ceremony. The church, established during the reign of Henry I, is in the heart of Smithfield area, with close links to nearby St Bartholomew’s Hospital. The church has a reputation for it’s wonderful Romanesque architecture as well as superb music. If the setting looks familiar, it’s because it’s been the backdrop to many TV series and films, including Four Weddings and a Funeral, Shakespeare in Love and The End of the Affair.
Wedding Ceremony at the High Altar
Coverage started at the church as guests arrived for the ceremony. Nick was on hand to greet family and friends, as they made their way towards the High Altar. On the way, they passed Exquisite Pain, Damien Hirst’s statue of St Bartholomew in the South Transept. Aki soon arrived, and walked down the long aisle to the High Altar for the wedding ceremony. The lighting is atmospheric, meaning fairly low! Using prime lenses and a mirrorless camera means I’m able to work in low light settings like this without compromise. I was also able to use the pulpit above the choir for an elevated view.
Drinks Reception in The Cloisters
After the ceremony, guests were led to the Cloisters for drinks and canapes. Again, the lighting was challenging, but by using all available light it’s still possible to tell a great story whilst capturing the atmosphere of the space in the photography. Bride and Groom and wedding guests then made their way over to the Oxford and Cambridge Club on Pall Mall for the wedding breakfast.
